The basics

What the PFSO does

The Port Facility Security Officer (PFSO) is responsible for the security of a port facility, in line with the International ISPS Code:

Risk assessment

what threatens the facility and how much

Security Plan

the measures and procedures of the facility

Implementation

that the plan is followed in practice

The 30-hour programme covers the knowledge required by the PFSO and their deputy, as described in Section 18.1 of Part B of the Code.

Who it is for

Who it is for

For those who are to take on the duties of PFSO or deputy PFSO, as well as security managers of ports and shipping companies.

Please note: under Greek law, the duties of a PFSO require, in addition to knowledge of the ISPS Code, a higher education degree and experience in the security of commercial port facilities or merchant ships.

The framework

Why it is needed

In 2002 the International Maritime Organization (IMO) amended the SOLAS Convention and adopted the ISPS Code for the security of ships and port facilities. In the EU it is applied through Regulation (EC) 725/2004 and Directive 2005/65/EC.

Every port facility covered by the Code needs a security assessment, a security plan and a security officer with the required knowledge.
