Applications of New Technologies in Natural Disasters<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Brief description of the Training Program<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This subject describes the types of natural disasters and climate change, which are considered key factors in the increase in extreme weather events and conditions. It also analyses how they are managed and mapped, using available software and computer technologies (e.g. geographic information systems, remote sensing, GPS). Finally, it presents all the actions needed to restore the social, economic and natural environment after any disaster.<\/p>\n

Program Purpose<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The aim of this programme is for trainees to learn the causes of natural disasters and crises. They will also understand the need to manage them and the methods by which this can be achieved. Next, they will understand the role of a team that needs to be formed to manage them. Trainees will first learn to distinguish between geodynamic disasters and hydrometeorological disasters, which are also linked to climate change. In addition, they will identify the causes of the greenhouse effect, as well as the methods for tackling climate change. Participants will then be able to understand the purpose of disaster management and strategic crisis management. Trainees will also understand how social management works in crisis situations. They will be able to understand the purpose of operational planning and how an operational plan is drawn up. After completing the units, trainees will understand the importance of assessing natural disasters and the key role that assessing losses, damage and impacts plays in how a community functions. They will understand precisely the techniques used to remove hazards. They will also be able to recognise the vital role of space-based Earth observation systems, global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS). Finally, the reader will seek to understand the methods for restoring damage to the natural environment after natural disasters. Specifically, the programme aims to inform trainees about damage assessment after a disaster, as well as the stages of restoration and recovery.<\/p>\n

Learning results<\/strong><\/h4>\n

On completing the training, participants will be able to identify natural disasters and crises and consider methods for managing them. They will also be able to distinguish geodynamic disasters, specifically landslides, earthquakes and volcanoes. They will know about the extreme weather events that can cause disasters, as well as changes in the climate. They will also have gained knowledge of the greenhouse effect and of the methods that countries have set out to tackle climate change. In addition, through the programme they will have learned about space-based Earth observation systems, used to monitor possible disasters and crises. They will be able to identify the main features of GPS and GIS systems. Finally, having first gained knowledge of natural disasters and crises and of the means to deal with both, they will also gain knowledge of environmental recovery and restoration.<\/p>\n

Unit 1 – Introduction to natural disaster management <\/p>\n

The aim of the training unit is for trainees to learn the causes of natural disasters and crises. They will also understand the need to manage them and the methods by which this can be achieved. They will then understand the role of a team that needs to be formed to manage them.<\/p>\n

Trainees will also understand precisely the techniques used to remove hazards, and other techniques. They will also be able to recognise the vital role of space-based Earth observation systems, global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS). Finally, trainees will be able to define precisely the role that mapping plays in managing natural disasters, and the computing tools used for it.<\/p>\n

Unit 5 – Restoring damage to the natural environment caused by natural disasters <\/p>\n

The aim of this training unit is for the reader to understand the methods for restoring damage to the natural environment after natural disasters. Specifically, it aims to inform trainees about damage assessment after a disaster, as well as the stages of restoration and recovery.<\/p>\n
