RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES (RES)

Brief description of the Training Program

The global community is trying to tackle the major problems of our time: environmental pollution, the effects of climate change and the depletion of natural resources, above all fossil fuels. One of the most important responses has proved to be the shift towards renewable energy sources. This is now a leading policy of national governments and international bodies, and continuous efforts are being made to increase both their use and their energy efficiency.

Program Purpose

Participants will learn the essentials of renewable energy sources, how they are used and the positive contribution they can make to the planet's environmental and energy problems. They will learn about technological developments in renewable energy, the specific characteristics of each source and how it is used, as well as the legal and institutional framework being built around them.

Learning results

After completing the training units, trainees will know the basic characteristics and properties of the various forms of renewable energy and will be able to assess not only their energy efficiency but also the financial side of the investments required. Trainees will also learn about occupational safety and equipment maintenance in RES installations, giving them well-rounded knowledge that will strengthen their professional profile for the growing number of jobs related to RES.

Units

Unit 1 – Introduction to Energy Production

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

All human activities require energy in its various forms. This training unit presents the forms of energy that people can use, their economic and environmental importance, and how energy resources are exploited.

Duration of training hours: 12

Unit 2 – Environmental Management – Environmental Protection

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

This training unit presents three important aspects of the energy and environmental problem facing the planet and how they are linked: the concepts and information related to the greenhouse effect, the main cause of climate change; the large increase in energy consumption, which feeds the greenhouse effect and depletes non-renewable energy reserves; and how replacing these with renewable energy sources can help address and solve the energy and environmental problem.

Duration (training hours): 4

Unit 3 – Energy Policy – Institutional Framework – RES Licensing

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

This training unit presents European and national climate and energy policies as they have developed over recent decades of growing awareness of the planet's environmental problem, together with the institutional framework created to implement them and how it has been adapted over time to meet changing needs.

Duration (training hours): 4

Unit 4 – Health and Safety in RES Installations

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

The training unit focuses on two groups of topics that are of particular interest to almost every business: the methods and tools used by a team responsible for managing a project, and the hazards that cause accidents and how to manage and protect against them.

Duration (training hours): 4

Unit 5 – Wind Systems – Small Hydroelectric Systems

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

Analysis of two energy sources that use renewable natural resources: wind and hydroelectric power. An overview of the applications that produce a large share of the electricity used on the planet without emitting the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and climate change.

Duration (training hours): 4

Unit 6 – New RES Technologies

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

In this training unit, participants will learn about the most modern renewable energy sources, whose use is steadily gaining ground as an effective answer to the environmental and energy problem facing the planet. It presents information and data on using biomass and biofuels, geothermal systems, and wave and tidal energy from the seas as energy resources. This knowledge will be useful to everyone, personally and professionally, in adapting to the demands created by developments in climate and energy.

Duration of training hours: 8

Unit 7 – Photovoltaic (PV) Systems – Solar Thermal Systems

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

In this training unit, participants will learn about the most modern renewable energy sources, whose use is steadily gaining ground as an effective answer to the environmental and energy problem facing the planet. It presents information and data on using biomass and biofuels, geothermal systems, and wave and tidal energy from the seas as energy resources. This knowledge will be useful to everyone, personally and professionally, in adapting to the demands created by developments in climate and energy.

Duration of training hours: 8

Unit 8 – Cogeneration

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

In this training unit, participants will learn the concept of combined heat and power (cogeneration), its advantages and its main applications, and will become familiar with a technology that, although it requires specialist knowledge, contributes to a more economical and rational use of energy.

Duration (training hours): 4

Unit 9 – Inspection and Preventive Maintenance of Mechanical Equipment

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

This unit covers the correct use and upkeep of a business's equipment. The aim is to understand why equipment maintenance matters for proper operation, the importance of adjusting measuring instruments, and the concept of calibrating these instruments.

Duration (training hours): 4

Unit 10 – Investment Appraisal

Purpose objectives of the thematic unit

In this unit, participants will learn the process and tools of investment appraisal, so that they can use them in their personal or professional choices and understand why businesses choose to go ahead with some investments while rejecting others.

Duration (training hours): 4

Duration of the program

  • Lifetime training hours: 70 hours
  • Modern e-learning hours: 70 hours
  • Hours of Asynchronous teletraining: 60 hours
  • Total hours: 200 hours
